Former Chronicle Editors Go Independent

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kaitlyn @ 7:43 pm

Dear supporters of The Chronicle—

We write to inform you that on April 29, 2008, all applicants (20 overall) for the 2008-2009 Editorial Board of The Chronicle withdrew their applications. We took this action after the administration informed the Editor in Chief and Managing Editors of structural changes in the selection process for the 2008-2009 Editorial Board.

As an alternative to The Chronicle, we have decided to join together and begin an online newspaper completely independent of Quinnipiac University funding.  For the time being the name of our online newspaper is The Quad News. Our goals are: To bring together students who share a common interest in the free flow of information on campus, who believe in freedom of speech and freedom of the press, and who are committed to creating the conditions that will make it possible to one day print a hard copy newspaper in addition to a multi-media platform news web site.

Dean of Students Dr. Carreiro requested recommendations from the Editor in Chief and the Managing Editors for the Editorial Board positions sans Editor in Chief based on applications filed earlier this month to them. Under this new structure, the recommended candidates would be interviewed and selected by Dr. Carreiro and Student Center Director Daniel Brown. In addition, the position of Editor in Chief and the new position of Student Publisher would be selected from a pool of senior students nominated by the five academic deans. Students would not be allowed to apply for these two positions.

In The Chronicle’s new structure, a publishing board consisting of the Student Publisher, the president of Student Government Association, the Dean of the School of Business, the Dean of the School of Communications and the Dean of Students, would oversee the newspaper’s operations.

In the past, the faculty advisor and the Student Affairs advisor would first select the Editor in Chief and Managing Editors through an application and interview process. After these positions were filled, these new editors, the Dean of Students and the faculty advisor would conduct interviews and select the remainder of the board.

Traditionally the Chronicle has been a student organization, run by students, for students, with financial assistance from the University. With this new selection structure, the administration would be choosing the students who will work in the student newspaper.

We intend to launch our independent website, www.thequadnews.net, at the beginning of the Fall 2008 semester. Although there is much planning ahead for the structure of our website, we are looking at a format that includes breaking news stories, Quinnipiac Bobcats’ game updates, and story topics similar to those that have previously appeared in The Chronicle.

The Quad News also has plans to team up with WQAQ and Q30 to create a multimedia platform that will cover all aspects of Quinnipiac University. This new opportunity gives students a taste of what the future of journalism entails: a multi-faceted news medium that is quick, to the point, informative and constantly updating.

Thank you to everyone who has supported The Chronicle this year and in years past. We look forward to serving the Quinnipiac campus the best way we know how: through accurate, timely reporting of news and events affecting our community.

Sincerely,

The former editors of The Chronicle and editors of The Quad News

Letter to Supporters of The Chronicle

Dear supporters of The Chronicle—

We write to inform you that on April 29, 2008, 19 out of 20 applicants for the Editorial Board of The Chronicle yesterday withdrew their applications for positions on the 2008-2009 Editorial Board of the newspaper. We took this action after the administration informed the Editor in Chief and managing editors of structural changes in the selection process for the Editorial Board.

Dean of Students Manny Carreiro requested recommendations from the Editor in Chief and the managing editors for the Editorial Board positions based on applications filed earlier this month. Under this structure, the candidates will be interviewed and selected by Carreiro and Student Center Director Daniel Brown. In addition, once the semester has ended, the position of Editor in Chief will be selected from a pool of students nominated by the five academic deans. A new position, Student Publisher, will be created to oversee all aspects of the newspaper’s operations. The Editor in Chief would report to the Publisher.

In the new structure, a publishing board consisting of the Student Publisher, the president of Student Government Association, the Dean of the School of Business, the Dean of the School of Communications and the Dean of Students, will oversee the newspaper’s operations.

With this new selection structure, the administration will be choosing the students who will work in the student newspaper.

At this point there is no Editorial Board in place for next year and the future of The Chronicle is uncertain.
